Do you need a website, and which kind

Marketplace and Instagram rent you attention; a website owns it. An honest filter for when you need one and what type.

On a marketplace or Instagram you trade reach for control: the platform owns the customer, the rules, and the fees, and your competitor is one swipe away. A website is the reverse: you own the experience, but you have to earn the traffic. Knowing when that trade is worth it saves you from buying a website you do not need, or skipping one you do.

When GBP plus WhatsApp is enough

A single-location service with local demand and a simple purchase (a barbershop, a laundry, a warung) often does not need a website on day one. A complete Google Business Profile plus a fast WhatsApp is the whole funnel. Spend the website money on photos and reviews instead, and revisit later.

When a website starts paying

  • Customers compare before buying (contractors, catering, B2B services).
  • You need a portfolio or case studies to justify your price.
  • You run ads and need a landing page you control.
  • You want search traffic beyond the map pack.
  • Corporate clients who check credibility before calling.

Pick the type for the job

A landing page sells one offer with one action, right for ads and single services. A company profile builds trust with services, portfolio, and contact, right for comparison purchases. E-commerce adds catalog and payment, right only when people actually buy online rather than chat first. In a chat-first market, many businesses need the first two and not the third.

What makes any of them convert

Speed first: Google's Core Web Vitals treat a page as good when the main content loads in about 2.5 seconds, and slow pages bleed visitors before they read a word. Then the above-the-fold test: in one screen a visitor should see what you sell, for whom, one piece of proof, and one button, usually WhatsApp. Real photos and a real address close the trust gap.

What you take away

  • Platforms rent attention; a website owns it but must earn traffic
  • Simple local services can start with GBP + WhatsApp and add a site later
  • Match the type to the job: landing page, company profile, or e-commerce
  • Speed (Core Web Vitals), one clear offer, and real proof do the converting
